- (OBIT: PORTLAND - Howard S. Noyes, 87, died on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, in Scarborough, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born on July 30, 1928, in Portland, third son of Earle W. Noyes Sr. and Helen (Sabine) Noyes.
Howard got an early start as a furniture mover working for his father, Earle W. Noyes. At the age of 18, he drove his first tractor trailer across the country to Spokane, Wash. Years later, he became president of E.W. Noyes & Sons. Having visited another agent in California, he was impressed with their palletized warehouse. So in 1971, due to urban renewal, the company moved from Cotton Street to Franklin Street, Portland, and the warehouse was built to store smaller furniture items in wooden pallets. The first of its kind in Maine.
He was voted a member of the United Van Lines board in St. Louis, Mo., serving three terms. He served on the Windham Lions Club which raised enough money to buy their first rescue unit with the newest medical equipment.
Howard and his wife/sweetheart, Betty, were married for 57 years, traveled all over the world visiting 37 countries. Wintered in beautiful Marco Island, Fla., for over 27 years and summered in Standish. He was an associate member of Capri Christian Church at Isle of Capri, Fla. He loved boating in Maine and Florida and was a very successful fisherman and hunter.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Portland, served as president of the church council, Sunday School teacher, adult adviser to the youth, and sang in the choir. He loved to read and study his Bible. He was a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ till the end.
In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by his loving wife Betty (Nilsen) Noyes; sons, Howard S. Noyes Jr., and David Noyes; brother, John Noyes, and sisters, Ruth Spaulding and Dorothy Pallotta. He is survived by his daughters, Betty Ann Tundel of Windham, and Cynthia (Cindi) Whitehead and her husband David of Standish; brothers, Earle (Windy) Noyes Jr. and Lester Noyes; grandchildren, Andrew Tundel and his wife Irina of Manchester, N.H., Paul Tundel and his wife Shannon of Topsham, Kurtis Whitehead of Waterville, and Kristina Denietolis and her husband Brian of Webster, Mass.; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham.
