- His wife, Dorothy, deposed 6 Jan 1846 that Thomas Colby served under Captain Devereux in Colonel Gerrish's regiment of guards, and enlisted for Amesbury. He served his term and then worked at his trade as a house carpenter in Newbury, MA; that her maiden name was Dorothy Williams; that Thomas Colby was on duty at Claverack, New York, 9 October 1779 to 22 June 1780; and at West Point in Captain Mighill's company, 1780.
(Actually his tours of service were as follows: private from Amesbury under Captain Stephen Jenkins, Colonel Jacon Gerrish's regiment, 14 October 1779 to 27 November 1779 in the Continental Army under General Washington, 1 month, 2 days, and as private under Captain Thomas Mighill, Colonel Nathaniel Wade's regiment, from 5 July 1780 to 10 October 1780, 3 months and 18 days in the Continental Army.)
