Personal name meaning, forests of weavers. Father of Elhanan from Bethlehem, who killed Goliath. Many modern Bible scholars follow early Greek translations and 1 Chronicles (1 Chr 20:5) and omit Oregim (REB). Others interpret Oregim as a common noun, identifying Jair as a weaver (NIV translation note). This is partly based on 2 Samuel (2 Sam 23:24), where an Elhanan of Bethlehem is identified as the son of Dodo. Jaare may be an abbreviated form of Kiriath-jearim.
