NOYES, WILLIAM W. Rank and organization: Private, Company F, 2d Vermont Infantry. Place and date: At Spotsylvania, Va., 12 May 1864. Entered service at: Montpelier, Vt. Birth: Montpelier, Vt. Date of issue: 22 March 1892. Citation: Standing upon the top of the breastworks, deliberately took aim and fired no less than 15 shots into the enemy's lines, but a few yards away. (U.S. Army Center of Military History, Building 35, 102 Fourth Avenue, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, DC)
On May 12, 1864, in Spotsylvania, Virginia, the fighting at the Bloody Angle had become so intense that the trenches were filled with the dead and the dying. Towards midday, there seemed to be an interlude with only occasional bursts of gunfire. Apparently, as a subterfuge, a confederate soldier raised his rifle with a white flag attached to the barrell. One 19 year old Vermont boy took this to mean surrender and poked his head above the trenches. He was shot dead.
Infuriated beyond control was Wallace William Noyes of East Montpelier, Vermont. He hopped atop the parapet and fired his rifle into the nearest confederate, only yards away. He then told his comrades to pass up more loaded rifles. He kept firing (at least 15 times) before he was forced to take cover.
For this act of heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1891. He was later wounded at Petersburg; surviving the Civil War only to die from a fall from a roof of a building that he was working on in 1910. He was a house painter.
Wallace's great grandson, Richard Campbell of Chelsea, Vermont is the current caretaker of the Medal of Honor.
On May 20, 2000, Armed Forces Day, a bronze plaque supplied by the Federal Government was mounted on a 200 pound piece of granite and placed at his gravesite due to the efforts of Elliott Morse, Maurice Cerutti, Tom McKenna and Dan Witcher. (Submitted by Elliott Morse)
