- According to her age at burial, Elizabeth Ives was born in 1744. She was not baptized in Peldon, Great or Little Wigborough or Langenhoe.
(I have found a record of an Elizabeth Ives who was baptized on 2/1/1745 at St James Church, Colchester. “Ives” was not a very common surname, and the baptism date ties in with our Elizabeth's age. I believe that it is possible that baptism record related to our Elizabeth. If it did, then she was the daughter of John Ives and Elizabeth nee Talbot, and had a twin sister called Martha plus at least one other sibling).
Elizabeth Ives married John Wright on 15/7/1762 in Langenhoe, Essex. The marriage register recorded her as being a spinster of Langenhoe and him as a bachelor of Peldon. The witnesses were John Bloomfield and Mary Salter. Elizabeth and John set up home in Peldon after their marriage.
They had seven children, all of whom were baptized in Peldon.
Elizabeth's husband John Wright died in 1781 and was buried in Peldon on 17/12/1781.
Elizabeth Wright (widow) married John King (widower) on 29/5/1785 in Peldon. The witnesses were John Matthewman and William Cracknell. Elizabeth and John set up home in Peldon after their marriage.
Elizabeth and John did not have any children baptized in the area. However, there are records in the archives of payments being made to “John King and children” in Peldon in 1798. There was only one John King living in Peldon at the time, and that was the one married to Elizabeth.
By 1798 all of Elizabeth and John's children from their previous marriages were over 20 years old, so they would not have been classed as “children” by the Overseers. It therefore seems to follow that John and Elizabeth must have had children after their marriage in 1785, even though they never had them baptized.
Elizabeth was only 41 years old when she married John King, and was therefore still of childbearing age.
I believe that John and Elizabeth King had two children, James born 1786 and George born about 1790. Both James and George were described as “bachelors of Peldon” when they married in 1812. Neither of them was baptized in the area.
Elizabeth's husband, John King, died in 1808 and was buried in Peldon.
Elizabeth continued to live in Peldon after she was widowed. The Peldon Overseers occasionally made payments (poor relief) to her.
Elizabeth died in 1820. She was buried in Peldon on 6/4/1820. The burial register recorded her age as 76.
