Notes |
- "History of Portland" says that John Proctor's wife, Esther, was a daughter of Edmund Mountfort and that Edmund's brother, Samuel Mountfort, "lived unmarried until he was seventy years old, after which he was twice married, the last time when he was over eighty years old" and that "he died in 1820, aged eighty three, without issue." On 3 Mar 1832, widow Esther Proctor sold to her son-in-law John Harris of Bethel "the real estate of my father the late Samuel Mountfort of Westbrook deceased which was set off as dower to Esther Mountfort widow of the said Samuel Mountfort my father" [Cum Co deed 128:162].
Clearly from this deed it can be concluded that Samuel did not die without issue and that there was a first wife, the mother of Esther.
