Physical Attributes when he enlisted in Portland, ME: Eyes: Hazel, Hair:Black, Complexion: dark, Height: Six feet one and one half inches.
Charles Enlisted in the Army as a Volunteer on 18 August, 1862 in the town of Portland, ME, age 24, occupation:a truckman. He enlisted for three years service and was assigned to Company A, Seventeenth Regiment of Maine. During his enlistment he was a wagonmaster and kept a diary that is in family records. He was honorably discharged effective June 4th, 1865 near Washington DC according to his discharge papers.
Charles Reade Hale and Jennie Austin are buried in the Auburn, ME Cemetery near the golf course and railroad crossing at Marstins Corner as seen by Edward R. Hale, his great great grandson.
