    Notes
    • She moved from Portland, Maine to New York City when five years of age she received her schooling there. She was recognized as a talented teacher at the age of 15 and received a certificate as assistant teacher in 1828. She had a special talent for instructing young children. Assigned to a school in a church basement, she became the first convert of Charles G. Finney in New York City in 1831.

She met George Cragin who also attended Finney's church, and they were married in 1833. They lived in the city for the next seven years, having two daughters that did not survive. During this period she became an ardent Perfectionist through reading the writings of John Humphrey Noyes. Instrumental in converting her husband, she joined the community at Putney with him after extensive correspondence with Noyes.

Some time after moving to Putney the Noyeses and the Cragins jointly adopted complex marriage. Twins were born to Mary Cragin, fathered probably by John Humphrey Noyes.

Mary Cragin was instrumental in the development of the concept of the children's house and along with Harriet H. Noyes was the first mother of children's house. She joined the community at Oneida with her husband and Harriet Noyes on March 1, 1848. Influential beyond her lifetime in the Community,, her descendants were active in the Community and her articles and correspondence were often reprinted in Community publications after her untimely death.
