- (OBIT: CARIBOU - Lionel Theriault Sr., 86, of Caribou, died peacefully Friday, March 10, 2006, at his home with his wife of 66 years, Rita (Damboise) Theriault, his eight children and many grandchildren nearby comforting him during his final days.
Over the years, Lionel founded and operated a successful multifaceted agricultural enterprise. He was a potato farmer, packer, broker and shipper who kept a keen eye on quality and promoted the superior benefits of the Maine potato. In all of his business dealings, Lionel was trusted and worked overtime to provide high levels of customer service. Farmers and potato buyers from all over the country regularly sought his advice and counsel, which he unselfishly provided. From the early morning hours until dark, his office on Water Street in Caribou was a daily meeting place for farmers who would talk about growing conditions and share market information. Employees at all levels of the organization respected Lionel. Lionel was a self-taught expert in the investment markets and a member of the New York Mercantile Exchange. As a student of world affairs, modern business practices and investments; he could always be counted on for lively and thought provoking conversations on current affairs.
In the 60's, his entrepreneurial pursuits led him to starting a farm tire business which quickly grew to become a full service retail and commercial tire distributor know as Theriault Tire.
During the harvest season the company always went the extra distance to provide service to Aroostook farmers such that during the legendary morning radio show "The Potato Picker Special," Theriault was affectionately referred to as "Lionel Theriault, the tireless-tire tycoon." Diversification resulted in the acquisition of two farm equipment dealers, the Oliver Farm tractor dealer in Caribou, which was later renamed White Farm Equipment and a John Deere dealership in Presque Isle. In cooperation with Monsanto, he also constructed, operated and later sold an automated custom blending fertilizer plant with an in-house soil analysis laboratory. For many years, he owned a limestone quarry in Quebec, which produced custom ground product for both farms and paper processing companies.
Lionel participated in civic organizations including the Caribou Chamber of Commerce, Caribou Development Corporation and the city budget committee. He served on the advisory board of the former Northern National Bank. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Caribou and Fort Fairfield Country Clubs. He also had a pilot's license. He attended the Holy Rosary Church and Caribou schools.
During his retirement years he traveled the country along with his wife spending many winters in Florida. He enjoyed fishing on Eagle Lake and bird hunting during the fall in the North Maine woods occasionally with grandchildren along for the tour.
Mr. Theriault was born Sept. 11, 1919, to Joseph and Julie (Pelkey) Theriault of Caribou. In addition to his wife of Caribou, he is survived by eight children, Janice Jacobs of Ellicott City, Md., Robert and Sallie Theriault, Barbara and Norman Collins, Lionel and Nancy Theriault and Wanda and Stephen Wentworth, all of Caribou, Alan and Gloria Theriault of Cumberland, Joyce and Romeo Dube of Westbrook and Carla and Chad Walton of Bangor; a sister, Bertha Morin of Higganum, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Marie Theriault of Caribou; and brothers-in-law, Mack Madore of Caribou and Glen Tyler of Clearwater, Fla.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Jacobs; a brother, Albert Theriault; and two sisters, Cecile Madore and Leona Tyler.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Monday, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with the very Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie, pastor, officiating in a Mass of Christian Burial. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall at the church. Spring interment will take place in the New Holy Rosary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to contribute in memory of Lionel may do so to the Caribou FFA, in care of the Caribou High School or the Lionel Theriault Family Scholarship Fund at the University of Maine in Presque Isle.
