    Notes
    • On the 23rd of Aug., 1864 he enlisted as a private in Company M, Massachusetts 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment at West Newbury, MA. This company served at the garrison of Fort Ward from Dec. 30, 1864 to Feb. 8, 1865. They were attached to the 3rd Brigade, DeBussy's Division, 22nd Army Corps at Washington as garrison duty in the defense of Washington, south of the Potamac.

He was mustered out of service on June 17, 1865 at Washington, DC and returned to his parents home in Haverhill.

He entered Brown University in Providence, RI where he graduated in 1871 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then entered the Newton Theological Institution, Newton, MA, graduating in 1874. He was ordained a Baptist minister at Amherst, MA on July 29, 1874.

On Oct. 21, 1874, he married at Providence, RI, Ella Dexter Mowry who was born at Northbridge, MA on Jan, 17, 1848 to John Dexter and Abiagail Baylies (Prentice) Mowry.

They first settled at Amherst, MA where he continued as Pastor until 1880. Here there first three daughters were born. Abbie Louise, Mabel and Ella Christine. In 1880, while living at Providence their only son John Irving was born. Shortly after John's birth they removed to Millbury, MA, where he served a Minister from Oct. 1880 to 1889. Daughter Ruth was born at Millbury in 1886.

In 1887 he also began a Sunday School in Worcester, and being well attended, the American Baptist Society organized the Adams Square Baptist Church on Lincoln Street in 1889, under Daniel's leadership, where he remained until 1898. The family lived on Lincoln St., in Worcester, a brief walk from the church. At this time he purchased land on Clark Street in Worcester where he engaged in farming. (See Worcester County Registry of Deeds: Book 1568:Page 574-5; March 9, 1898)

He continued his ministry at Worcester, MA until 1906, then becoming a pastor at North Oxford, MA until Nov. 1910.

Throughout the remainder of his life he also engaged in farming. During the depression years, he removed to Millbury, from his farm on Clark St. in Worcester, and his son John's family moved from Millbury to Clark Street to raise food for the family.

His wife Ella died in Jan. 1922. Daniel died at Worcester in 1936. They are both buried in the North Burial Ground, Providence, RI.

Adams Square Baptist Church It was 1887 when a civil war veteran by the name of Daniel Hoyt began a Sunday School in what is now the Britain Square Area of Worcester MA. As an American Baptist Minister, Hoyt started several Sunday Schools in different areas, but the Britain Square class proved most successful. As a result the American Baptist Society decided to invest their efforts in a church plant in this fruitful part of Lincoln St. The result was the organization of the Adams Square Baptist Church incorporated 1889. Daniel Hoyt pastored this church for the first ten years. The Original building was purchased by the church from the American Baptist society for one dollar.
