- FRANKLIN COUNTY. -- GREENFIELD.---- Many Children, But A Poor Home. There was a case in the district court yesterday morning that resembled the old woman living in a shoe with too many children. Ten children, the oldest 13, the youngest one year, children of Mr and Mrs German P. Noyes of Millers Falls, were before the court for being neglected children. The complaint was made by an agent of the society for the prevention of cruelty to children. Mrs Noyes, who is a fresh-faced young woman of 30, was married at the age of 16. Her husband, who is employed by the Millers Falls' company as a teamster at $9 a week, is somewhat older. The children are bright-looking, and were well behaved. The agent making the complaint was the first witness. He gave an account of his visit to the Noyes household last Thursday in company with Deputy Sheriff E.J. Pratt. It was brought out that the children were clothed for the occasion, and presented a much better appearance than usual. Upon entering the Noyes home the visitors were greeted by hens and chickens, which evidently had the run of the house. Three rooms were used, the father and the boys sleeping in one room and the mother and girls in another room. But little was found in the way of provision beyond a few beans, some oatmeal and corn muffins. The children were described as dirty and ragged. Deputy Sheriff Pratt testified that the floor looked as though it had not been swept all winter. One boy was clad in an old shirt of his father's, and beyond that negligee attire had nothing. Judge Lyman continued the case for two months. The family made an interesting group, as the children appear quite attractive. It is likely that the visit of the authorities will result in improving conditions under which the family has lived. Springfield [Mass.] Republican, May 7, 1901.
