    Notes
    • Moved to North Yarmouth about 1730 with his brothers John, George and Warren.

Joseph and his wife reared a family of nine sons and two daughters on 43 acres of Cousin's Island. It is related that all of these sons were masters of vessels and one day passed the fort in Boston Harbor. The officer in command of the fort, learning that so many vessels, under command of men of the same name, had passed, feared that some mischief was brewing, and went to the city to investigate the matter. He was surprised to find that it was true, and that the men were brothers. He invited them to supper with him and the event was long held in remembrance of having been in the good old English style.

After all his children were born he moved to the mainland and sold his property to his son Daniel.
