Major General Edward Noyes obituary
Rites for General Set
Retired Maj. Gen. Edward Allen Noyes, 71 year old former commanding general of Brooke Army Medical Center, died Thursday after a lengthy illness.
Graveside services for Noyes , BAMC commanding general from 1948 to 1953, when he retired after 39 years of military service, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded.
A native of Astoria, Ore., and medical graduate of the University of Oregon, Noyes, who lived at 212 Wyanoke Dr. here, entered the National Guard in 1914. That year he became a reserve officer of the Army Medical Corps and a short time later received his regular Army commission.
One of the very few regular Army physicians to be double promoted, Noyes was advanced from first lieutenant to major during World War I.
Noyes' travels in Army medicine were world-wide, including service with the Army Relief Mission in Japan after the great earthquake of 1923 and as chief surgeon of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. He was twice surgeon-general of the U.S. Army.
As a young lieutenant, Noyes was first assigned to the old Station Hospital at Fort Sam Houston in 1918. Only a short distance away, on April 30, 1953, he was retired from active Army Medical Corps service.
Noyes was a member of the American Medical Association, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Association of Military Surgeons and Alpha Omega Alpha fraternity of the University of Portland Medical School.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thelma Noyes; one daughter, Miss Claire M. Noyes of Forrest, Va.; and a sister Mrs. Lee Bennett of Carmel, Calif.
Noted military officers will serve as honorary pallbearers for the funeral services, under the direction of Porter Loring.
