- Ole and Rena’s last names in Norway were Mortensen. Bratlandsbakken is the farm they lived on in Norway and when they immigrated they took the name of Bakken.
(The "last name" confusion is probably rooted in the confusion between patronymic names and (unchanging) surnames. The latter started to get more commonly used in Norway, and in the USA many had difficulties picking one.
In the USA women may be found using their female patronymic, the male form of it, their father's patronymic, their grandfather's patronymic, their husband's patronymic or their father-in-law's patronymic name as last name, unless they had a place-derived name. The name was often changed a bit haphazardly in different sources...)
