William Howard Noyes drove Metro Transit buses for 35 years. After retiring, he drove part time eight more years until quitting for good last fall.

He told people he wanted to keep driving until his wife turned 65 and retired. But the real reason, his wife says, is that he just enjoyed it.

"He liked the routine, and connecting with people," said his wife of 46 years, Arlene Noyes of Mountlake Terrace.

Mr. Noyes died Monday (June 8) of the effects of diabetes.

      He was 66.

One of his favorite stories regarded his early years, when he substituted for regular drivers who were off. After one run on a rainy day, dozens of complaints came in that he hadn't picked up people.

"It turned out the regular driver let them wait in their apartment building, out of the rain, then signaled when he was approaching," said Noyes' wife. "Bill said that guy was crazy to do that.

"But many years later, Bill was on vacation. It rained. The fellow that got his run got complaints that people hadn't been picked up."

Born in Seattle, Mr. Noyes graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He began driving buses in 1954 and retired in 1989, after cancer surgery made him tire easily.

Soon, however, he began to drive again part time.

"He'd get up at 3:30 a.m., go out to the bus barn, read a paperback and have coffee with his friends," said his wife.
"Then he'd come home after the run and we'd have breakfast. He said it got him going in the morning and kept him going."

Mr. Noyes, an avid reader of Western adventure novels, was a past president of the Mountlake Terrace Friends of the Library and vice president of the Retired Transit Union. A Mountlake Terrace resident since 1953, he also served on the Mountlake Terrace Historical Planning Commission.

In off-hours, he liked to boat, fish, hunt - and take driving vacations.

Other survivors include his children Terry Larson, Jerry Noyes and Chuck Noyes, all of Mountlake Terrace, and Sherryl Palazzo of Everett; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Edgewood Baptist Church, 20406 76th Ave. W., Edmonds.

Remembrances may go to the American Diabetes Association, Puget Sound Region, 557 Roy St., Seattle, WA 98109; or to Mountlake Terrace Friends of the Library, 23300 58th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043.)
