    • (OBIT: Robert Noyes died at his residence on Main Street Wednesday afternoon, at the age of 77 years and 17 days. His wife preceeded him on the 16th of last month and since which time Uncle Robert, as he was familiarly known, had but little desire to live but he bore his grief manfully with quiet resignation and continued his work in the bindery up to last Friday afternoon when he stopped work on account of a severe cold. He received the best of care and nursing possible but he felt that his time had come and it was his turn to cross the river and medical aid and nursing were of no avail.

Robert Noyes by trade was a book-binder, having learned that business in Portland under Mr. Pratt before he became of age. He has always been engaged in that business. For several years he carried on book-binding for himself in Portland and through the influence of the late Ezra Beal he was induced to come to Norway and open a bindery and book store in 1843. His old bindery was located near where now stands the Noyes Drug Store. He moved to the residence where he died in 1844. He has carried on business here since '43 though his family resided for three years on what is now the Eben Pottle farm.

The deceased was at the time of his death president of the Norway Savings Bank. He was the only member of the first board of directors now living in town. He was postmaster in Norway under President Pierce and was engaged in the meat and provision business with Alfred Shattuck during the war. Previous to this time he founded the Noyes drug store or started the first drug store in town. He, in company with Gen. Geo. L. Beal, carried on book-binding and a stationary store for some time previous to the war.

Mr. Noyes has always been a busy man and ever ready to assist in any public enterprise that was to benefit the community in which he lived. Politically he was a democrat though never an offensive partisan. He was cheerful, light-hearted and always good natured and has entertained the writer many hours by his stories and reminiscences of olden times.

At the time of his death he and S.H. Colesworthy of Portland were the two oldest book-binders in the state. They learned their trade together. Mr. Noyes has been in business longer than any man in Norway.

Mr. Noyes married Elizabeth I. Souther of Portland in 1838. Both have now passed beyond and two daughters, Helen Maria and Elizabeth Augusta, survive him. The latter is the wife of N.W. Millett.

The funeral will occur at the house this Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm and the public are invited.)
