    • His name is variously spelled Gurdon and Gurden, however, each census consistently spells it Gurdon.

      Children born in Portsmouth, Va., Cornwall, Vt., New Haven, Fair Haven and Woodbury, Conn.

      He worked on the farm and graduated with a M. A., Amherst College, 1846. He worked his way through Union Seminary. Came as a colporteur and to preach in Damascus, PA, and stayed in the home of James McArthur. Agnes McArthur was teaching school and sang in the church choir.

      Prepared Phillips Acad., Andover. Union T. S., 1846-49;

      Ordained Portsmouth, Va. in Presbyterian Church, Dec. 19, 1849; pastor there, 1849-51; there were slaves in the family, but Agnes was forbidden from teaching them to read. Gurdon became ill and they had to move.

      Pastor Congregational Church and post master, West Cornwall, Vt., 1852-54;

      Pastor New Haven, Conn., 1854-61, resigned when the church split on issues of the Civil War;

      Pastor 2nd Congregational Church, Fair Haven, Conn., 1861-69; lived in the Burwell House.

      Woodbury, Conn., 1869-79;

      Pastor Stony Creek, Conn., 1881-87; a mission church to which Gurdon went by train to preach Sundays and Wednesday prayer meeting..
