Sanford Noyes (1761-1843) was drafted in Capt. John Gavit's company to guard the shore of Rhode Island. In 1832 he applied for a pension and it was allowed for two years actual service as private.
Though only fifteen years old when war was declared, he was employed to carry dispatches between New London and Newport and was probably in the saddle for long periods of time.
He was, however, a regularly enlisted and trained soldier, and the fact that his father was in command in this vicinity probably accounts for his being kept out of actual warfare.
There is no picture of him extant. As described by his daughter, he was above the medium height, slight of figure, of fair complexion, with brown hair and eyes.
