      Russell was the son of Adele N. Taylor and Leroy W. Noyes who predeceased his son, the dear brother of Robert N. Taylor of Methuen MA. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 14 1965 in Parris Island SC and arrived in Vietnam on November 29 1967 where he was assigned for duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

      During the second half of April the Battalion moved the CP to the vicinity of C 2 and C 3 near route 561 north of Cam Lo while participating in Operation KENTUCKY in Quang Tri Province. On the 29 – 30 of April, CAP 3 became heavily engaged with a large enemy force near Cam Vu and a unit of Task Force Robbie a mechanize unit within the Cam Lo area was dispatched as a reaction force. Company D was placed under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the Task Force as the assaulting infantry unit. By late afternoon the Marines had joined in the battle that lasted well into the night when the Marines were forced to withdraw and set up a defensive perimeter. Company D sustained eight Marines who were killed in action, two were listed as missing until recovered, fifteen who were wounded, one of whom died of his wounds. LCpl Noyes was one of the casualties, first reported missing, his remains were recovered he had been killed by shrapnel from an explosive device.
