Notes |
- Hope's father, John Chipman, in his will dated 12 November 1702, probated 17 May 1708, mentioned Hope as one of his daughters and provided that she was to share equally with her sisters in his moveable estate [MD 3:181-84].
Hope and her first hisband, John Huckins, lived in Barnstable where their five daughters were born. John Huckins died very young, intestate. The inventory of his personal estate was taken 27 December 1678 by Joseph Laythrop [sic] and Barnabas Laythrop, and amounted to £154-12s. John's housing, upland and meadow was valued at £70 and one-fourth part of a ketch was valued at £30. The entire estate, with the approval of Hope's father, Elder John Chipman, and of her late husband's father, Mr. Thomas Huckings [sic], was given to the widow, Hope, towards the support and bringing up of the five children "which she had by him." When John Huckin's father, Thomas Huckins, [Sr.], and John's brother, Joseph, were "cast away" in a storm the following year, 9 November 1679, the only surviving son, Thomas Huckins, [Jr.], was appointed administrator of his father's estate. In the settlement, dated 14 March 1679/80, Hope Huckins, relict of John Huckins, eldest son, received £25 for the "benefit of the five daughters she had by John Huckins." She was also given £50 towards her own support and for bringing up the children, in addition to land at Cooper's Neck and Cotuit. Eighteen months later, Thomas Huckins married Hope's younger sister, Hannah Chipman.
Hope's second husband, Jonathan Cobb, was mentioned by his father, Elder Henry Cobb, in his will dated 4 April 1678, probated 3 June 1679. Hope and Jonathan and their family continued to live in Barnstable until 7 July 1695, when their youngest son was baptized in the West Parish church, although Hope Cobb was not dismissed to the church in Middleboro until 3 June 1703. The Cobbs moved to Middleboro, Mass., before 12 November 1695, when Jonathan Cobb's name appeared on a "List of Inhabitants and Proprietors in Middlebery." At a town meeting 12 December 1695, Jonathan Cobb and John Bennett were chosen to persuade Mr. Cushman to be their teacher. On 3 June 1707, Jonathan Cobb was named with Ebenezer Tinkham and Jeremiah Thomas "to provide for the Ministers and Messengers" who were sent to the Council the following week. Church records show that Jonathan and Hope Cobb were admitted to membership in the First Church of Middleboro before 1708.
Otis, in his Barnstable Families, stated that the Cobbs then moved on to Falmouth, now Portland, Maine, but Plymouth County land records show that Jonathan and Hannah remained in Middleboro and died there although most of their children settled in Maine.
