    Notes
    • Samuel Cobb moved from Barnstable to Middleboro with his mother and father about 1695. He lived in Middleboro during the first twelve years of his marriage and his first six children were born there. In 1717 he moved to Falmouth, Maine, where he built the second house in Purpoduck, but next year he moved to Falmouth Neck. On 18 January 1720 the Proprietors of Falmouth voted that Samuel Cobb should have a three acre lot as well as a one acre house lot. On 24 February 1720/1, the Proprietors granted Samuel another 30 acres of land, "being the fifth lot in number southerly towards Brimhals, fronting on the River." This was signed by Benjamin Larraby, John Sawyer and Thos. Thomas. [Falmouth Town Recs, 1:8, 16, contributed by Clayton R. Adams].

Samuel was a ship carpenter, 38 years of age, when he settled in Maine. His brothers, Jonathan, Ebenezer and Joseph, soon followed him and settled at Purpoduck. Samuel must have taken his family to Manchester, Mass., a town in Essex county, between Beverly and Gloucester, for a short time, because his son, James Cobb, was baptised there, 14 July 1723, called "son of Samuel [Cobb], in full communion att Middleboro." In Falmouth he lived on Congress Street, near India Street. He served as town clerk, treasurer and selectman, and on 10 July 1727, he was chosen as deacon in the First Church of Falmouth.

On 26 April 1731, he was one of the committee which inventoried the estate of James Mills of Falmouth, and on 4 February 1731/2, he helped inventory the estate of Benjamin Wright. Between 8 October 1733 and 1 August 1737 he appraised the estate of Peter Walton, William Rouse and Moses Goold, He inventoried the estate of Job Winslow, 23 September 1743, and of Capt. Zebulon Tricky, 10 October 1744.

Many land records describe his purchase and sale of property. In 1739 he moved to Capisic where he and his son, Chipman Cobb, had a corn mill and four acres of land which they purchased from Thomas Westbrook [York Co Deeds 19:297]. On 3 December 1739, Samuel Cobb, House Carpenter, sold to Thomas Westbrook for £150 an acre of land with a dwelling house in Falmouth. His wife, Abigail, signed away her dower rights. Witnesses were Benjamin Allen and Nathaniel Coffin, Jr. This deed was acknowledged by both Samuel and Abigail the same day and was recorded 4 January 1739/40 [York Co Deeds 19:297]. Later he and Abigail lived with their son, Samuel, in Portland, on Fore Street, "fronting the beach."

On 14 October 1748, Samuel Cobb of Falmouth, Housewright, sold for £40 to Benjamin Winslow of Falmouth, yeoman, [his son-in-law], thirty acres of land lying in Falmouth, bounded "as may appear by the Return of the Proprietor's Committee for laying out lands ... as assigned to me the said Samuel Cobb." This deed was witnessed by Othniel Tripp and James Winslow. This deed was not acknowledged by Samuel Cobb until 16 June 1759 and was "recorded from the original" 21 October 1765. [Cumb Co Deeds 4:386-87]. On 30 November 1762, Samuel Cobb of Falmouth, Housewrite [sic], in payment of 40 shillings by Benjamin Winslow of Falmouth, Husbandman, sold "all of his right, title and interest whereby I was invested by the Town's Govmnt to make up the Hundred and Four Acres." Witnesses were Isaac Hardy and Luke Hovey Woster. Samuel Cobb acknowledged this deed 12 February 1765 and it was recorded 21 October 1765 [Cumb Co Deeds 4:388-89].

In a deed to his son, Ebenezer Cobb of Falmouth, housewright, 4 February 1754, Samuel Cobb of Falmouth, housewright, sold him a lot of land "at the Neck" in Falmouth, half of which Ebenezer, in turn, granted to his son, Smith Cobb of Falmouth, housewright, 19 December 1761, "as a good perfect and absolute Estate of Inheritance in fee simple" [Cumb Co Deeds 1:392-93].
