Notes |
- He was the 58th Community child and spent his earliest years in Children's House. At the break-up he went to Niagra Falls, to live in his uncle's household. When he was 15, he was advised by John H. Noyes to "see how good a Concordance you can make of yourself in the next five years." T.R. Noyes once said "my father would have swapped all his sons for one-half of George."
George attended the Loomis School in Kenwood, and went to Cornell on a full scholarship, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1892. He began working for the Community as a salesman. On September 12, 1899, he succeeded John Lord on the Board of Directors. He became Treasurer in 1911 and a Vice President in 1920. Shortly thereafter he semi-retired to devote the rest of his time to writing the Community history. He completed two volumes before he died, and spent one summer in the 1930's helping R.A. Parker with "A Yankee Saint." He left two more volumes in manuscript.
In later years he was seriously shaken by his youngest daughter's fatal illness in 1929. His succinct summary of Community religious experience held that "The old Calvinistic doctrine, that man was created wholly depraved and was incapable of righteousness except as moved by God, was manifestly out of harmony with the spirit of the times."
The Community's historian, George Wallingford Noyes, was undoubtedly the most dedicated 20th century disciple of John H. Noyes.
