COVELO, Dec. 12. -- Funeral services were held at Mina Wednesday for Mrs. Margaret Baker, aged former resident of that neighborhood. Mrs. Baker died Monday, Dec. 7, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Elliot, in Redwood Valley. The body was brought through Covelo Tuesday and was met by her grandson, Fred Reed and wife at Mina. If Mrs. Baker had lived until Christmas she would have celebrated her 93rd anniversary. She was laid to rest beside her husband and other members of the family who have passed on.

      by - JUANITA (ELLIOT) HAMPTON
"I copied a few little things when I was just really young this was 1934. Now this was about Margaret Noyes Reed Baker 1839-1932. Her parents moved with three other married young couples, into the wilds of Maine, and there established homes for themselves. Fifty six children were born of these people. Margaret's family having 13 which was the smallest family in the settlement.

Margaret was the next to the youngest child having a younger brother Daniel. When Margaret was a young lady she fell in love and her love was returned, but she refused to marry her sweetheart because of his poverty.
She sent him away and in a short time he died of tuberculosis. Margaret blamed herself bitterly for his death. When Margaret was (21) years of age, she married Elbridge Jacob Reed. Seaman and later Captain of his own vessel.
In the telling of this courtship she said: "He ask me to marry him every time he came to see me, but I would not have him. Finally he returned from a voyage and before coming to see me he determined once again to ask for my hand. And this time he was not to be put off." "He said, I intend to marry you and you can't get rid of me so you may as well accept me now."
Margaret and the Captain were married and two children were born to them. Almar Noyes Reed and Theron Delmar Reed.
Captain Reed died of Cholera while on a voyage. He was in Ipswich Harbor and Delmar his youngest son was with him. Almar left home when quite young and came to California. He married Maria Ellingwood and to them were born five children; Margaret, Merrill, Lura, Frank and Wilfred Warren. Delmar lived with his mother, he became a lawyer to please her but he always desired to be a sailor. However, he always remained a dutiful son. Margaret married Frank Baker when she was forty and in a short while they moved to California where they lived for awhile in Oakland. And then in Ferndale where they established their permanent home. She and Frank lived at Mina at times. She was again bereaved when her husband Frank died.
She then lived with her son Almar until his death, then she returned to her home once more. (That's in Ferndale.) The last four years of her life she lived with her eldest granddaughter Margaret and she died there in their home in 1932.")
