    Notes
    • He seems to have inherited in a remarkable degree the military spirit and fighting qualities of his ancestors, and aside from the distinction gained by him in the service of his country he probably was the most prominent man of his time in Brunswick. His revolutionary record may be noted as follows: private in Captain Lithgow's company, at Falmouth March 11 to November 3, 1776; first lieutenant in Captain White's company, under Colonels Francis and Tupper, January 1, 1777, to October 11, 1780; was at Ticonderoga and Saratoga; joined Washington's army in Pennsylvania and was in service more than three years. After the war he was commissioned colonel in the Maine militia. Before the war and for a time afterward he was a blacksmith, later engaged in lumbering operations, owned three large farms and other real estate, and otherwise became possessed of large wealth. He was selectman in 1798, representative in 1794-95, and one of the overseers of Bowdoin College from 1798 to 1815, when he resigned.
