Notes |
- Original member of the Oneida Community.
The Skinner family came from Chichester, England in the mid-1600's. In early life John Skinner embraced the views of the Restorationists and later the doctrines of the Quakers. He was a Quaker teacher when he first heard John H. Noyes preach and he made a personal confession of Christ the next year in 1838. He joined the Putney Association in 1839 and the Oneida Association on June 16, 1848 with his wife and young son.
He was almost the first person to sever all family ties and follow Noyes, and he became the first assistant in writing, editing and publishing "The Witness" and "The Perfectionist". At Oneida he was variously a printer, editor, proofreader and, along with everyone else from time to time, a chainmaker. His descendants became active in the Community. One of the spiritual leaders of the Community and its press, John Skinner died at the age of 86.
