    • (OBIT: John Hamilton Came to Whitewater Township in 1865 and Resided There Until His Death

Despite the tender care of his family and that of physicians and friends, John Hamilton, an old resident of Whitewater Township , and one of the most prominent farmers of this vicinity, died at his home Thursday afternoon at 3:30 of Valvular disease of the heart. Mr. Hamilton has been gradually failing for the past year. About three weeks before his death he had a fall, which undoubtedly quickened the end.

Mr. Hamilton was born in Glasgow, Scotland, June 26, 1829. At the age of 13 he emigrated with his parents to Canada. The family settled on a farm in Dummer Township. Peterborough County, Ontario. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Marguerite Bell of Norwood, Canada. In 1865 he came to Whitewater Township and settled on his farm east of Williamsburg, where he has since resided and where he died. Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, and seven children, George, William, Matthew and Mrs. Brace Herald of Williamsburg. Mrs. Frank Pesick of Reese, Mich. and James and David Hamilton of Calumet, Michigan.

The funeral services were held Monday morning from the M.E. (Methodist/Episcopal) church of Williamsburg. The deceased was then taken to Elk Rapids for burial, the Rev. Mr. Young in charge. Mr. Hamilton's four oldest sons acted as pall bearers. The church was thronged with friends and relatives of the deceased, which together with the long funeral cortege and the many moist eyes, attested the high esteem in which Mr. Hamilton was paid by all who knew him.)
