Notes |
- At the age of 16 he joined the Methodist Church where probably he met his future wife.
After their first child was born he moved to Champion, New York and in 1834 he received the doctrine of Perfectionism from a disciple of Jarvis Rider and John B. Foote. At about this time he also began subscribing to the paper published by the New Haven Perfectionist. Mr. & Mrs. Abbott joined the Community at the Oneida Reserve on February 10, 1848, the first members who had not had some previous experience with communal living. The association they joined was two weeks old.
They survived the deaths of their sons John and Charles in 1852 and 1848 respectively. On November 8, 1856 they seceded from the Community only to return seven years later.
From time-to-time a farmer, plumber, and tinker, John Abbott remained faithful, unpretentious, and active until the end of the Community when he probably left with his wife and two children for Batavia, New York.
