- (Walter Hein, age 98, of Forsyth, passed away on October 22, 2004 at the Rosebud Health Care Center in Forsyth.
Walt was born the son of Christian and Augusta (Kipplin) Hein on May 29, 1906 in Artesion, South Dakota. In 1912, at the age of 6, arriving on an immigrant train, with their farm machinery and livestock the family came out from South Dakota. Walt settled with his family on their homestead, north of Forsyth. Walt grew up and was educated in the Forsyth area. Through the 8th grade, he attended Mud Springs School, north of Forsyth, where he had several perfect attendances. He continued his education at Forsyth High School. Following his schooling, Walt returned to the ranch where he raised cattle and sheep. In the late 1920's he bought a new McCormick Deering threshing machine to thresh his own grain crop and for area neighbors. For a short period of time, during the 1930's, Walt worked on road construction.
On June 7th, 1939, Walt was united in marriage to Vina N. Leary in Miles City, MT. Together they made their home where Walt's family homesteaded and the current ranch still operates. While on the ranch, Walt continued to grow his garden and milk his cow. Walt built several things using rock, including the foundation that the original family homestead sits on now.
Walt enjoyed riding his horse, gardening, wood working, playing cards, his chickens and the ranch life but most of all he enjoyed his grandchildren.
Walt continued to ranch until 1994, when he and Vina moved to town.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years Vina, his sisters Edna and Ann, his step daughter Marion Kanta, his daughter-in-law Bonnie Hein.
Walt is survived by his daughter Keith and Esther Hein/Leistikow of Klamath Falls, OR; his sons, Eddie (Pearl) Hein of Forsyth and Butch Hein of Forsyth; his step son, Walt (JoAnn) Schulenberg of Casper, WY; his brothers, Gus Hein of Bozeman, MT, Chris Hein of Forsyth, and Gene Hein of Kalispell, MT; his sister Mary Hicks of Twin Falls, ID; his grandchildren, Vina, Cindy, Walter William "Bill", Larry, Kim and Scot; 12 great grandchildren and 5 great-great-children.
