    • Personal name meaning, Hero like. Herod the Great was the second son of Antipater, an Idumean, who was appointed by Julius Caesar as the procurator of Judea in 47 B.C. After his fathers appointment Herod received the government of Galilee, Herod was 15 years old. Shortly after receiving Galilee he also awarded the government of Coele-Syria. Herod lived to be 69-70 and died in 4 B.C.

      In 41 B.C., Herod was appointed tetrarch of Judea by Anthony and was forced to abandon Judea the following year. He went to Rome where he received the appointment of King of Judea. With the help of the Romans, Herod took Jerusalem in 37 B.C. and established his authority over his dominion in just a few years. Herod was ruthless and perpetrated many acts of bloodshed against his own household as well as his subjects.

      According to a traditional story, Herod on his deathbed called to him all of his nobles and had them executed before he died so that there would be mourning at his death. It was at the time of this fatal illness that Herod ordered the slaughter of the infants in Bethlehem.

      Herod was the builder of many splendid structures in Jerusalem along with the rebuilt temple. He began restoration of the temple in 29 B.C. and completed it in 1 1/2 years. After reigning 37 years, Herod died of a terrible disease in 4 B.C.
