- "She was a sturdy, resolute character. When her husband went to St. John's river for 3 years to work, she cleared land, raised crops, and supported the family with the help of a 12 yr old boy (her son?) and her father in law. They pounded their corn and wheat for bread in a hard wood trough. For soda, in those days the ashes of burnt cobs was used, or a lye made from common ashes boiled down a little. After Mr. Willey's return they built a framed house and barn. Some 20 or 30 years after taking up the land they sold to a Mr. Shorey--hence the name "Shorey Corner". Then they began anew two miles or so farther north."
