- "Charley was born in Kentucky and came to Missouri in 1897 with his parents, sister Annie, half brother Riley Burton, half sister Alvia, and his grandparents, Lockey and Milton Womack. They came by wagon and settled first in Greene County near Walnut Grove.
The family lived in Greene County about seven years and then moved to Dade County between Everton and Pennsboro. There he met Pansy who was teaching school. They married in 1915 and moved to Liberal about 1916. They lived with her parents until after Ray was born when they moved to a house in town.
Charley worked the shovel in a coal mine south of Liberal until 1926 when they purchased a farm one mile east and two miles north of Liberal in Barton City Twp. He farmed the land and in later years raised registered hereford cattle. He was a member of the Liberal United Methodist Church.
Charley worked hard at whatever he did and was a community leader. He was one of the kindest and gentlest men I have ever known. I never heard him use a four-letter word. In fact, he never said a lot of anything--he was always rather quiet. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, and he was always ready and willing to help anyone in need."
