- Beede went to Prince Edward Island after she married Stephen O'Connor. Stephen's family lived there. Beede was known as Sarah to the Prince Edward Island folks, but was called Beede in letters from home. Beede was unable to write and depended on her daughter Anna to write letters for her.
Beede died of a stroke at a fairly young age leaving Harriet and her sister Anna ages 8 and 12. She also had a daughter from an earlier relationship who stayed in NH and lived with MaryAnn(Hawes)Day who was the sister of Harriet Hawes Paul. The illegitimate daughter was named Mabel Alice Paul and went by Alice M. She married Harold Guay and had a family of her own.
Harriet and Anna both had nervous breakdowns in their 20's and were institutionalized for many years. Anna never was able to live on her own, but Harriet was placed with a family in Charlottetown when she was in her forties and became somewhat independent. She know lives in a community for senior citizens where she writes poetry. Some of her poems are somewhat autobiographical and indicate that the family was very poor and sometimes had to ask neighbors for food. Harriet writes of having catalog pictures instead of toys.
