    Notes
    • Clarence Otis Bates, an orphan, showed up at the Oren Noyes home and said to Laura "you said you would like a little boy like me." Laura was open to the arrangement but Oren was not so keen to the idea.

Otis later married Laura's niece, my [Don Crover] maternal grandmother. Laura insisted that my mother should call her grandma; thus, we were all trained to say Grandma Noyes.

When the Noyes family came to Oregon in 1898, Oren would not pay for Otis on the train; but Oren paid passage for Laura's brother Del. The conductor noticed the same boy was exercising the horses at stops so Otis had to be extra careful not to get caught.

Otis built a hard protective shell around himself for emotional protection. As a boy I was afraid of him but when he grew older I saw through the shell and saw a very tender, emotional man. [Don Crover]

    Bates Park Bridge
    Bates Park Bridge
    Linn County, Oregon

This is the 1921 and 1930 Bates Park Covered Bridge, originally named McDowell Covered Bridge (World Guide No. 37-22-13), over the South Santiam River in Linn County, Oregon on road 1286 at milepost 2.9. The name of the bridge changed from McDowell when Bates Park was established. The bridge was actually two separate bridges: The 1921 span was red and stood on tall, steel caissons. The 1930 span, designed by the State Highway Commission, featured windows and had a concrete foundation. The older span was painted barn red, while the newer span was white. The 2-span bridge was located southeast of Lebanon, 5 miles north of Sweet Home. The newer span was a 153 foot, 8 inch Howe; the older span was a 139 foot, 6 inch Howe. The older red bridge was replaced in 1957 while the newer white bridge was razed in 1970.

When the Bates family moved to Waterloo, OR in 1925-26 the Bridge was the McDowell Bridge. C. Otis Bates built a new set of buildings across the river on the bottom ground. The park had a bank of sand on the inside bend of the river. C. Otis built a house, barn, picnic tables, restrooms, playground equipment, cabin, chicken house, hog house and diving platform in the river and dressing rooms. For 35 cents a car load you could take advantage of the facilities. His son Arthur took over the farm. In time the bridge took on the name Bates Park Bridge. [Don Crover]
