- Came from England to Falmouth, Maine where he first settled. Afterwards he cleared up the farm subsequently owned by Capt. Joseph York, in Pownal, and later owned and occupied by Andrew Hodgsdon. Melzar Turner was remembered by the older settlers of the town for his peculiarities. He planted an immense orchard and was very careful to set a long row of trees by the roadside that travellers might partake of the fruit. It was noticed by a subsequent generation that these trees bore fruit remarkable only for being very sour.
