- (OBIT: George Washington Noyes, 67 Franklin street, among the oldest of the Civil war veterans in Haverhill, a veteran shoe worker and former shoe manufacturer, died early last night in his 92nd year at the Gale hospital soon after he was taken there to undergo an operation.
In poor health for the past three years, Mr. Noyes, who was one of a small number of surviving Union veterans living in this city, had been suffering with complications incident to old age, which affected his heart considerably. His condition became such that he was removed to the Gale hospital late yesterday afternoon, where it was thought he might submit to an operation. He died at the hospital at 6:30.
Mr. Noyes was born in Minot, Me., Sept. 2, 1841, the son of the late Peter and Cynthia (Verrill) Noyes, both of whom were Minot residents. He spent his early life in his birthplace and later removed to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was associated with a shoe firm as a salesman and was also engaged in the manufacture of shoes for a time. For many years he followed the occupation of shoe cutter.
Leaving Philadelphia, Mr. Noyes went to Lynn where he worked in the shoe industry until he came to Haverhill. He had been a resident of this city more than 50 years, being identified in the shoe industry until he retired in 1918.
Mr. Noyes had an outstanding record in the Civil war, having served under noted leaders and taken part in a number of encounters. He enlisted Sept. 10, 1862, and served as a corporal in Capt. Almon C. Pray's Co. E 23rd Regiment, Maine Infantry. He was discharged in Portland, Me., on July 15, 1863 and re-enlisted Aug. 2, 1864, and served as first sergeant to Capt. Edward S. Butters' Co. A, 29th Regiment, Maine Infantry. Mr. Noyes was discharged on June 5, 1865, by General Orders. He saw much active service and was wounded in both legs in the battle of Cedar Creek on Oct. 19, 1864.
A resident of Lynn many years before coming to Haverhill, Mr. Noyes was a member of General Lander post, G.A.R. of that city. He was also a member of the former Union Veterans' Union of this city, a member of the First, Tenth and Twenty Ninth Maine Regimental association, meeting with the other comrades at Long Island, Portland, Me. as long as his health would permit. For 68 years Mr. Noyes had been a member of Tranquil Lodge of Masons, Auburn, Me., being one of its oldest members. He joined the lodge on Sept. 19, 1864.
Mr. Noyes leaves his wife, Mrs. Alice Marble Noyes, and a daughter by a former marriage, Miss Charlotte G. Noyes, Wilmington, Del., also a niece and nephew. Funeral services will be held from the Dole and Childs funeral home, 148 Main street, Friday afternoon at 2, to which relatives and friends are invited. Rev. Silas L. Morse, assistant pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate. Representatives from General Lander G.A.R. post, Lynn will attend and perform a service and Merrimack Lodge of Masons, this city, will conduct a committal service at the grave in Linwood cemetery.)
