Alden Haden Jumper was listed in the household of Joseph Jumper in the 1820 Census in the under 10 age group. He was listed in the household of Joseph Jumper in the 1840 Census in the 20-30 age group. Based on the birthplaces of Alden's siblings, it appears that the family did not move from Maine to Indiana until after 1835.
Alden was listed as the head of family on the 1850 Census in Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana. he was 31, born in Maine, listed as a farmer with $3000 real estate. Included in the household were Alden's wife, Amanda G, 25 born in IN; a son, Benjamin S,; and 3 daughters, Abigail A., 4, Sarah J., 3, and Mary E., 1. All the children were born in Indiana.
Alden was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana. he was 41, born in Maine, listed as a farmer with $6700 real estate. Included in the household were his wife, Amanda, 33 IN; and 6 children, Abigail 16 IN, Benjamin 14 IN, Jane 12 IN, Mary 10, Horace 5 IN, and Lucy 2 IN.
Per his obituary, Alden raised a company of volunteers in the Civil War and was mustered in as Captain, Co. K, 26th Ind Volunteers. He served in that regiment from August 1861 to January 1866 and mustered out as a Major although brevitted as a Lt Colonel.
In 1869 Alden and his wife Amanda moved from Ripley Co. Indiana to Osage Co., Kansas where he lived on a farm one mile north of Malvern.
Per his pension request in 1873, Alden suffered eye damage from exposure at the siege of Vicksburg which eventually incapacitated him for manual labor. He was awarded a pension for blindness on 29 July 1876.
