    • (FORT MYERS, Fla. — Mr. Edward T. Stocker, 93, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly ofHaverhill and Groveland, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 in Ft. Myers.

He was born in Haverhill, Oct. 30, 1916, son of the late Herbert and Mildred (Tasker) Stocker. Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Stocker graduated from Haverhill High, Class of 1935.

During World War II, he resided in New York, where he designed aircraft parts in support of the war effort.

While in Massachusetts, Mr. Stocker was a member of the Groveland Congregational Church. As a youth, he belonged to Boy Scouts of America, Troop 12, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award, the first to do so in Haverhill. Mr. Stocker was very proud of the fact that his stepson and grandson followed in his footsteps and became Eagle Scouts.
Woodworking was his favorite hobby for many years. He started his own business, Arts & Crafts Industries. An extraordinary craftsman and perfectionist by nature, he designed and constructed his home in Groveland with the assistance of his father. In the 1950s, he designed and constructed a 32' boat from the hull up. This later provided a great source of enjoyment for many family gatherings over the years.

During this period, he joined Bell System that evolved into Western Electric, then AT&T Technology Systems. While there, he was awarded 14 patents in Mechanical Engineering designs to improve the manufacturing efficiency and quality of products used in switching systems for telecommunications.

Achieving the designation as Registered Professional Engineer along the way, he retired as a Senior Staff Engineer after 33 years with the company.

In his retirement, he and his wife of 37 years, Dorothy (Ross) Stocker, moved to Florida where they enjoyed living by the water's edge, a lifelong dream. Recently, they moved to the Shell Point Retirement Community, Fort Myers, where he became a member of the First Congregational Church on Sanibel Island in Florida.

Besides his wife, his survivors include a daughter, W. Anne Stocker of Kutztown, Pa.; a stepson, Dr. G. William Freeman of Groveland; a sister, Shirley Johnson and her husband Donald of Haverhill; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a niece. Mr. Stocker was the father of the late Deborah L. Stocker, who died in 2007; and husband of the late Nance (Baumgartner) Stocker, who passed away in 1971.

The graveside service will be private in Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill, at the convenience of the family.)
