    Notes
    • "'Grandpa White' was a very tall and strong man, a great wrestler, but very kind, especially to children. He loved to play with children, and his grandchildren and 'step' grandchildren thought it a great treat to go and spend a day at Grandpa White's. He lived on the main road between Wallingford and Rutland, not far north of where the road branches off toward East Clarendon. The house was burned down long ago and nobody lives on the place now . . .

"I know nothing of Grandfather White's ancestors. Have always heard him spoken of as a large, powerful athlete, with a very kind heart. He was a soldier of 1812. He married Polly Ann Smith, a Vermont school-teacher. She was a descendant of a wealthy Scotch family by the name of Macoy. Grandma White died of cancer, and later Grandpa married the Grandmother of Cousin Nelllie Crossman's husband, so he told me in Vermont. He said that Grandfather White was very tall; would have to stoop to enter most doors, was broad shouldered and very powerful. Said his uncle had a tavern near where Grandpa lived, and he had an understanding with him, that when they got boisterous in the bar-room, as they often did in those days, he would send for him, and the minute Grandpa entered the room, order reigned. I have heard Father tell what an athlete he was. On training days they came from far and near, trying to throw him at wrestling, but he had never been thrown in his life."
