    Notes
    • Hiram Pike was born in the house which his father, John Pike, built on Rust Gore in the southwest corner of the town.

As a young boy he attended the local school and no doubt worked on the farm as did all boys of his age.

By the time his grandfather, Dudley, died in 1838, Hiram had already left Norway for perhaps "greater adventure, most likely for employment" as he was married in Bangor, Maine at the age of 23. About the time he married Sarah Ladd, his father, John, built a new house and having no further use of the old one gave it to Hiram. He also gave him a strip of land off the easterly, or northeasterly side of his farm and moved the old house upon it and set him up in housekeeping. It is not known how this marriage to Sarah Ladd ended, however, Bradbury (p. 305) states " Hiram's wife Sarah proved to be poor help in his family and just up and left." Hiram was not a successful farmer, but like many of his descendants, would become a successful carpenter.

The next records we have of Hiram is that he sold property in Bangor on 3 July 1835 to Edmund Hall. This would have been 3 years after his marriage. If they ever lived on the farm in Norway, given to him by his father, it would have been for a short time. Hiram is listed as a trader and house wright (Deeds: Penobscot Co., Vol. 59, p.521). The property had been purchased in 1833.

Hiram and Sarah sold to Edmund Hall of Frankfort, yeoman: Lot of land situate in Bangor ... thence running east one hundred and thirty two feet to land belonging to heirs of Richard Pike ... being the same lot I purchased of Philip Coombs 5 October 1833. (In signing this deed Sarah only made her mark. Her mark is witnessed by Philip Coombs. Her name written by Simeon Treadwell.)

While holding this property 1833-1835, a son, Hiram, was born to Hiram and Sarah, 4 July 1834 in Bangor, Maine. Hiram Pike is listed in 1834 as "joiner", at George Soule's (1834 Bangor City Dir. George Soule is listed: "laborer, h centre, east side".)

Shortly after Hiram and Sarah sold the property in Bangor they must have moved to Frankfort, Maine. On 5 January 1836, Hiram owned land in Frankfort, Maine. On this date he sold for $200, a lot of land in Frankfort to Jeremiah Holmes (Lot No. 8, Main Street. Waldo Co. Deeds: Vol 22, p.249.) Then we find them back in Bangor area, when on 15 February 1836 a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Pike was born. Then on 3 December 1837, they were back in Frankfort when Dorcas Amanda Pike was born.

The family is listed in the 1840 Norway census:
      1 Male under 5 yrs under 10 (Hiram, Jr., b. 1834)
      1 Male 30 yrs under 40 (Hiram, Sr., b. 1809)
      2 Females under 5 yrs (Sarah, b. 1836; Dorcas, b. 1837)
      1 Female 20 yrs under 40 (Sarah, mother: b. 1809)

The only census records found listing the family by names is in 1843 (v/r: Norway, Maine.) This information was recorded by parents in 1843 after a fire on 4 January 1843 which destroyed town records. The name of the mother is not listed so we may assume Sarah had already left the family.

Within 3 years 11 March 1840, after the birth of Dorcas Amanda Pike in Frankfort, Hiram returned to Norway and sold 120 acres of land to Seth Pike, his brother, who had inherited the Dudley homestead, This probably was the land given to Hiram by his father.

The next record on Hiram is his second marriage, 20 September 1844, Dracut, Massachusetts to Charlotte Knowles.

Hiram again begins his ventures as he and Charlotte begin their marriage. They go to Brooklyn, New York, where Hiram seeks employment in the Brooklyn shipyards. Their first two children are born there: Samuel Higby Pike, b. 20 May 1845 and James Henry Pike, b. 29 July 1849.

Shortly, after the boys are born, the family moved back to Maine. On 10 September 1851, Hiram Pike of Scarborough, Maine bought land from John M. Staples (Deeds: Cumberland Co.: 235/549). He sold it to Ameyle A. Thurston 28 April 1854 for $200. 10 Acres. (Lib:520/252)

      The next child, Ida L. Pike was b. ca. 1852; d. 20 Oct 1891.

      1870 Portland census:
Hiram Pike, age 60 yrs., carpenter
Charlotte Pike, age 50 yrs., keeping house (b. 1819)
      James H. Pike, age 20 yrs.. (b. 1848)
      Frederick F. Pike, age 16 yrs. (b. ca. 1854)
      Eugene M. Pike, age 11 yrs. (b. 1859)

Samuel Higby Pike had married 15 Feb. 1879 and not at this address. Ida L. Pike had married 6 Jan. 1869 was probably living in Scarborough with husband Freeman S. Sanborn, as he died there 22 April 1881.

In the 1880 Portland census, 291 Portland St., only the following are listed:
      Hiram Pike, age 70 carpenter
Charlotte, his wife age 60, keeping house
Eugene M. age 21, his son - Druggist
David Crockett (black), age 30, brick maker, born Virginia
