BARRE TOWN, Vt. — Alan "Al" H. Noyes, (Brig. Gen. USAF Ret.), 84, of Wildersburg Common, died Sunday morning, April 26, 2009, at his home.
Born Sept. 7, 1924, in Haverhill, he was the son of William D. and Annette (Spaulding) Noyes.
He was a 1942 graduate of Haverhill. High School and following World War II military service, he received his degree in Business Administration in 1948 from Boston University.
On Sept. 8, 1946 he married Joyce Pingree in Haverhill. They made their home there, moving to Barre, Vermont in 1960. Al was Vice President and General Manager of WSNO/WORK radio stations in Barre, retiring in 1990.
His memberships included the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce of which he was its first President; a fifty seven year member of Kiwanis International, being District Lt. Governor in 1963 and President of the Barre Club in 1964; a founder of the Central Vermont Economic Development Corp. and was instrumental in bringing the Bombardier Corp. to Central Vermont and following his retirement, he served as Executive Director of the Vermont Assn. of Broadcasters until December, 2007. Civic activities included being an Alderman in Barre City from 1966 to 1971 and serving on the committee forming the original Barre Ambulance Service. Other memberships included Granite Masonic Lodge #35, Barre Council #22 R and SM, Barre Chapter #26 RAM and St. Aldemar Commandery #11 KT, all of Barre and Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier as well as the Country Club of Barre; The Barre Elks Lodge #1535 and Barre American Legion Post #10. He enjoyed golf, bowling, Red Sox baseball and Celtics basketball. General Noyes began his military career as a private in the Army Air Corps on December 7, 1942. He served as an aerial gunner and turret mechanic with the first B-29 Wing organized in World War II, performing duty in China, India and the Pacific.
Following his graduation as a distinguished military student from the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps at Boston University, General Noyes was recalled to active duty as a First Sergeant during the Korean War. While serving with the 22nd Bomb Wing at March Field, CA, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in June 1951.
Subsequent reserve assignments included administrative, personnel, information and operations positions with the 94th "Minuteman" Wing at L.G. Hanscom Field, MA, during its transition from fighter-bomber to troop carrier to military airlift missions. His service with the 94th concluded in 1970 as plans and programming staff officer.
Moving to Vermont in June 1960, he was reassigned in August 1970 to Headquarters, 14th Air Force, Dobbins Air Force Base, Ga., with attachment to Headquarters, Vermont National Guard as State Preparedness Liaison Officer, an assignment he held for nearly eleven years.
In April 1981, General Noyes was appointed Assistant Adjutant General for Air, and was reassigned from the Air Force Reserve to the Vermont Air National Guard. General Noyes was promoted to Brigadier General in the State of Vermont on June 1, 1983.
In September 1984, General Noyes retired from Federal service, although he remained on duty as Assistant Adjutant General, on state status, until January of 1988.
Besides his wife Joyce, of 62 years; survivors include three daughters; Linda Livendale and her husband, Charles; Rosamond Conklin and her husband, Richard; and Deborah Robinson and her significant other, Bill Swartz and three sons, William Noyes and his wife, Diane; David Noyes and his companion, Cathy Chamberlain and Jonathan Noyes and his wife, Susette Ballard, 13 grandchildren; Bonnie (Livendale) and Michael Hughart; Jeffery and Courtney Noyes; Gregory and Maria Noyes; Robin and Carolyn Pickel; Heather (Pickel) and John Sanders; Brian Conklin; Steven Noyes; Taylor Noyes; Ben and Adam Schersten and Aaron, Scott and Daniel Robinson and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was predeceased by his grandson, Joseph Alan Livendale and two sisters and a brother.
ARRANGEMENTS: Al's life will be celebrated Friday, May 1, 2009 at noon in the Barre Congregational Church. Internment with Full Military Honors will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
