    Notes
    • In the spring of 1824 James Lockwood occupied the land adjoining the village of Royal Oak (as now known) which he had entered in 1821, and built upon it a large double house of hewn logs which he opened as a hotel. Within a few weeks of Mr. Lockwood's arrival the Noyes brothers, Abraham and Benjamin, located on the southwest quarter of section 9. They were bachelors. [Hist. of Oakland County.]

In letters from Michigan to Wheelock dating from 1839 to 1873, one that informs the family of the death of Abraham’s wife during a cholera epidemic is especially poignant.

Abraham writes, “Everything is at a stand. We don’t see a wagon or a cart unless a coffin in it. The steam boats don’t run…stages only to carry the mail. I send you the papers but they do not tell the tale of it. It is impossible to get nurses to tend to the sick, and the hospital is the only place where the poor can flee to.”
