- (In his undated will "Richard Browne of Newbury" desired to be buried in the burying place in Newbury and bequeathed to "my son Joshua Browne when he shall be of the age of one and twenty years, all that parcel of my upland and meadow that lyeth near the little river as it is now enclosed, and my five acres of upland adjoining to Goodman Smith's land, and my share of meadow, which I have equally with George Little, upon the little river" and livestock "and my own freehold for encouragement to live with his mother until he be of the aforesaid age"; to "my son Richard Browne the house and lot I now dwell upon with the lot adjoining to Robert Long's land and that parcel of land adjoining to Richard Pettingall's" and my eight acres of salt marsh lying in the great marsh" and "my parcel of meadow adjoining to the land that Benjamin Roafe hath now in possession and the freehold which was Gyles Badger's which belongs to me, and he my son Richard shall pay out of his share ten pounds to each of his three sisters within three years"; to "my son Edmund Browne all my share of land that belongs to me which was formerly Joseph Carter's that is to say half the plowland, pasture and meadow, with the house and barn that hath been built by me and half the priviledge of freeload", both Richard and Edmund to have their legacies at their mother's decease, or if she marry again, at age 21; to "my three daughters Elizabeth, Sara, and Mary" £10 in stock at marriage; and "whereas I am bound to leave my wife worth threescore pounds, in lieu of it I give unto her the thirds of my lands during her natural life"; wife sole executrix, she to pay John Badger his portion; "my son Joshua" to have only what was bequeathed in this will "so that he never desire any more in relation of any thing given to his brother Joseph deceased by his uncle George Browne deceased"; if a son dies before he comes of age, land falls to the other two and if either daughter die before marriage, then her portion to fall to "my other two daughters"; "loving friends" Richard Kente, Nicolas Noyes, Robert Long and "Josef Noyce" overseers [EPR 1:339-40].
The inventory of the estate of "Richard Browne of Newbury," who "deceased April 26, 1661," taken 5 June 1661, totalled £634 3s., of which £400 was real estate: "six and twenty acres of upland & meadow with house & barn and eight and twenty acres of upland and meadow and a house, 1/2 a barn & six and twenty acres of upland & meadow" [EPR 1:340-42].
On 4 March 1677/8, "John Bager of the one part and Richard Browne, Sarah Browne and Mary Browne, all of Newbury, on the other part with the consent of Elizabeth Browne mother to them all" settled the estates of Giles Badger and Richard Browne on the occasion of the death of Richard's son, Edmund, at Nevis; John Badger recovered the lands that had been his father's and paid his half-siblings a sum to be agreed upon [ILR 4:161; EPR 3:220-21].
