- (OBIT: "Mary Arvilla Searles, widow of Orren Hardy, died at the home of her son, Ernest E. Hardy, at Livermore Falls, Dec. 31, aged nearly 89 years. She was the second child of Gardner and Rhoda Townes Searles, to whom were born ten children. Her grandfather, David Bixby Searles, was one of the earliest settlers of Wilton, enduring many hardships. Mary Searles and Orren Hardy were born and lived in Wilton, moving to Weld in 1872, living on the so-called Coburn farm on Center Hill, where he carried on an extensive farming business until a few years before his death, which occurred in 1900 . Thirteen children were born to them, the two eldest being twin girls. Eva dying at the age of 22 years, Emma, wife of the late Leonard Richards of Fort Fairfield, at the age of 43. Nine children are living, all of whom attended the funeral at Livermore. Charlie, who lives in Farmington, Orie, at West Kennebunk, Marilla, wife of Dr. Rowell, Wilton, Addie, widow of the late George Lakin, Farmington, Cora, wife of Joel Carleton, Phillips, Arthur of Fayette, Minnie, wife of W. L. Page, Farmington, Willis of Phillips, Ernest of Livermore Falls, with whom she made her home. Mary A Searles Hardy was a member of the Methodist Church and a woman of sterling qualities, great energy and ability. Forty years ago she was considered one of the best domestic cheese makers in Franklin County, having made in one summer 4,000 pounds
besides caring for a family of nine children. At the age of 58, alone, with horse and express wagon loaded with cheese, she made several trips from Weld to Rangeley. In her declining years most of her time was devoted to making and embroidering worsted quilts, there being about twenty in all. Great interest was always manifested in the welfare of children and grandchildren. Auto rides, of which she had many, were a source of great pleasure, one the past season being to West Kennebunk. She kept in touch with local and passing events, reading the papers daily. A slight cold and weak heart were the direct cause of a two days' illness.")
