    Notes
    • Was treasurer of H.S. Noyes and Brother at the time of its closing in 1932 and was the last of six generations of the Noyes family to engage in comb manufacture in Newburyport and West Newbury. The reasons for the eventual closing of W.H. Noyes and Brother (called the Noyes-Walton Comb Company after 1927, when it merged with the comb making firm of John Walton of Philadelphia) were not so abrupt. The general economic climate in the early 1930s doubtless played a part; in addition, the horn comb business was threatened both by the increasing use of synthetics as well as a diminishing of the supply of its basic raw material. The growing practice in the American West of dehorning calves meant that fewer horns from adult animals were available. Towards the end, the Noyes-Walton Company obtained some imported horn from South America and South Africa, although declining business evidently did not warrant use of this avenue of supply. For a time it was thought that Noyes-Walton might complete the final stages of manufacture on partially completed combs from Europe, but this was not possible because the Noyes machinery was calibrated to English measure and the foreign stock was metric.
