Notes |
- Darius S. Noyes, a pioneer settler of Dane county, died at Onalaska, Wednesday morning, February 13, where he had made his home for the past 12 years with his daughter, Mrs. Belle Freeman and his son, Elmer. Had he lived until next July he would have been 90 years of age. He was born at Presten, Chenango County, NY on July 13, 1839 and was a descendant of the Rev. James Noyes, who came from England in 1634. Mr. Noyes came to Wisconsin with his parents, Samuel and Electa Nichols Noyes, when 6 years of age. The trip was made over land in a covered wagon. They spent the first winter in Wisconsin territory with relatives, the James Sowls family at Milton. The following spring the father bought a large tract of land from the government in Clyman township, Dodge County, where he erected a tavern, which the family conducted for many years on the Watertown and Green Bay military road. The elder Mr. Noyes died in 1862 and is buried in the cemetery he gave an association for this purpose and the school property joining his farm. In this cemetery is also buried his father, Gersham Noyes, one of the few revolutionary war soldiers buried in Wisconsin. D. S. Noyes received his early education in the country school on his father's farm, later he finished at Wayland College, Beaver Dam. He was married in 1864 to Miss Lois S. Gilman at Plymouth, WI who died at Sun Prairie in 1909. They lived for a few years on a farm in Clyman township and Plymouth and then moved to Sun Prairie in 1869 where Mr. Noyes has since resided until taking up his residence at Onalaska. He is survived by 6 children, who were all present at the funeral. They are: Mrs. Belle Freeman of Onalaska, Mrs. May Warden of Milwaukee, Mrs. Nellie Pease of Chicago, Mrs. Nora Philpot of Sun Prairie, Elmer of Onalaska, and Ray of LaCrosse; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the home of Mrs. Philpot last Friday afternoon at 3:30. The Rev. Harold Trost, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated. The Rev. W. F. Wagner, pastor of the German Methodist Church, gave the prayer. Burial was in the family lot in the Sun Prairie Cemetery. The music was given by Mrs. E. C. Cobb and Mrs. L. W. Porter, with Mrs. Russel Kendell at the piano. Pallbearers were Mr. Noyes' two sons, Elmer and Ray Noyes, his son-in-law, John Philpot, E. E. Beers, Gordon Freeman, and George Wolf.
