    Notes
    • Children born in Salem, Massachusetts and Atkinson, New Hampshire.

After the war he moved to Atkinson, NH and was a farmer there raising chickens, cows, vegetables and taking his vegetables and eggs to market daily by horse and buggy. He went to Haverhill to market, five miles each way; quite a long trip then on a daily basis. The milk was picked up daily every morning and taken to the Wason MacDonald plant in Haverhill. Isaac did only the minimum work required on Sundays, even if he had a field of hay ready to be harvested it would have to sit till Monday. Once a cow stepped on his foot causing blood poisoning in his leg and the leg had to be amputated. This was done at home. The doctor brought all his surgical instruments and the surgery was done on the dining room table. Isaac's wife assisted the doctor giving the ether etc. She held up quite well throughout the surgery but collapsed afterwards. After the operation, his son Harry put the leg, amputated to the knee, into a box, sealed it and put it in the barn for safekeeping. In the following days Isaac would complain of his leg being cold (the missing one and may not have realized right away it was gone), and so his wife had son Harry bring it into the house and store it in the cellar. After that Isaac never complained about the leg being cold again. He didn't live long after this surgery and was buried in the Plaistow North Parish Cemetery.

[These notes are all from Isaac's daughter, Marguerite.]
