    Notes
    • From Gloriach Caberno:

15 years ago I wrote to The National Archives and asked if they had any papers regarding my ggrandfather's war service. About 3 months later I received a huge box 3" thick with papers. William had applied for a pension, was denied, reapplied, his ex-wife applied, etc., and there it was - his whole life laid out before me. In one deposition he recounted his history before enlistment:

"I have no brothers or sisters, my mother died when I was six months old, and my father went to Canada when I was a year old, and I have never seen him since. I do not know whether he is living or not." One deposition mentioned William may have an uncle living, but he wasn't sure.

Depositions were taken from neighbors, soldiers and officers he served with, and doctors who treated him. He was in the 81st Infantry Regiment of New York, and he claims to have been injured when at the battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia in 1862 a shell went over his head, causing him deafness in one ear. There were about 30 individuals deposed, with half saying he became deaf as a child, and the other half that he was not deaf when he went into service. He eventually received a pension of $10 a month.

But it's so interesting to hear about his early life from his neighbors, school teacher, adopted mother and her brothers, boyhood friends. He definitely was born in Richland, with one neighbor saying the first time she saw him was at the funeral of his mother. Names people! Names!! But no names of mother or father. There is a cemetery in Richland which has been partially walked. I
started looking for any woman buried about the middle to the end on 1842. As William's middle initial is "T" and very few Noyes men have that initial, maybe her last name started with a "T".

As far as DNA goes, I haven't seen any matches to a Noyes member. So many people submit tests, but never submit a tree. Maybe I need professional help with deciphering the results. Lots of matches to my grandfather John Henry Noyes' wife: Ida Hattie Harris. She had Gorton, Greene, Spencer, Millard, Olin etc. - all well researched names from Rhode Island. No surprises there.

That's about all I know about William. He was 5'3, black eyes, dark full head of hair, 130 lbs.
