We learned this week here at First Congregational Church of Webster Groves, of the passing of Mary Maack Elllis.

Mary Ellis, 96, of Webster Groves, died on Sunday, June 25, 2017. She was born April 20, 1921, in St. Louis to Alice Johann and Albert Carl Maack. She had one brother, Robert S. Maack, who predeceased her. She was a life-long resident of St Louis, and graduated from University City High School in 1939. Mary graduated from Washington University with a BA in Psychology in 1943 and was a lifelong member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Mary married Roger F. Noyes, her first husband, soon after her graduation in 1943. Roger was killed in action in the Pacific in November, 1944. Their son Roger was born in May, 1944. In 1949, Mary wed Robert G. Ellis and they had two children, Susan and Peter.

Mary is survived by her daughter Susan Ellis Oviatt (Jack), of Socorro, New Mexico, and her grandchildren, Sally Johann Oviatt and Peter Gifford Oviatt.

She was a joyous and creative force. For over 30 years she ran Mary Ellis Interior Design, helping many friends and neighbors beautify their homes and bring pattern, color, and zip into their lives. Webster Groves was home to Mary for over 75 years and she was active at First Congregational Church and a founding member of the Webster Groves Historical Society.

She loved travel, picnics and summers in Michigan. Merry, Mary will be missed by many and remembered for her love of life and positive attitude. A scrap of paper with these words in her handwriting exemplifies her spirit, “The only thing I did not procrastinate was joy.”)
