Notes |
- S. Newell Noyes was reared in the Granite State, and received a liberal education for those days at Montpelier, Vt. During his younger days, he taught school for a number of years in his native State, but for about one year after his removal to Dodge county, Wisconsin, in 1845, he made his home with his brother Isaac, in Burnett Township, whom he assisted in the duties of farm work. He afterward located on some land he had entered and purchased in connection with his brother Bradley, and in 1847, having come to the wise conclusion that "it is not good for man to live alone", he was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. Curtis, a native of England, who came to America in the early part of 1847, and until her marriage made her home with a sister who resided two miles east of Beaver Dam. Mr. and Mrs. Noyes then resided on some land two miles east of Beaver Dam for two years, then made a permanent settlement on the land owned by Mr. Noyes. He became one of the most influential and successful farmers of the county, improved a magnificent farm, and tilled it in a manner that showed that he was the thorough master of the "primitive occupation of man".
On January 1, 1878, he was called upon to pay the last debt of nature, and his walk through life was such that of him it was with truth said "Well done, thou good and faithful servant". His widow survives him and resides in the old homestead, which is now a part of the prosperous city of Beaver Dam. To their union four children were born: Algernon F.; Eda, wife of E.L. Atwood, of Trempealeau County, Wis.; Gesza H.; and Clarence, who died in infancy. In politics Mr. Noyes always espoused the principles of the Republican party, and although interested in the success of his party, never sought or desired public preferment.
