Van Wie 1732 House in 1942
Van Wie 1732 House in 1942
This scan shows the Hendrick Van Wie House of 1732 as it appeared circa 1942.

Harold Donaldson
Eberlein and Cortlandt
Van Dyke Hubbard
characterized it thus:
"The HENDRICK VAN WIE HOUSE..., built in 1732, is one of the most interesting brick farmhouses in the whole region. The walls bear Van Wie's initials and the date. Near the river, the house is about 4 miles below Albany and faces east; its site on the southern slope of a hill necessitates an high basement (quite above ground at the south end) and a flight of steps to the door on the main floor. The brickwork is excellent, but especially noteworthy are the brick-cheeked dormers with chimney-like brick finials and the dormer peaks, above the window openings, nogged with brick-work. There are little granary-doors high in one gable end. Unfortunately the house is falling to ruin.

It is not, however, beyond possibility of repair."

The photo is Plate #135 and the quote on pp. 140-141 in
_Historic Houses of The Hudson Valley_ by Harold Donaldson Eberlein and Cortlandt Van Dyke Hubbard, sponsored by The Hudson River Conservation Society,
Inc. It was evidently published originally by Architectural Book Publishers, Inc. which holds the 1942 copyright. I have an edition published by Bonanza Books, a division of Crown Publishers, Inc.

From illustration in Helen Reynolds, "Dutch Houses in the Hudson Valley before 1776" (1929).

Veteran & Patriot - Navy Cross
Veteran & Patriot - Navy Cross
The Navy Cross is the United States military's second-highest decoration awarded for valor in combat. The Navy Cross is awarded primarily to a member of the United States Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Coast Guard (when operating under the Department of the Navy) for extraordinary heroism.[2] The medal is equivalent to the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Air Force Cross, and the Coast Guard Cross.
